How they work:
The drow use birth
glyphs like we use star-signs to indicate likely personality traits.
The following exert
from the compendium of drow lore best explains:
**************************************
Birth Glyphs
Total no. of glyphs in set: 46
Birth glyphs are used
by the drow to denote personal attributes as defined by the four aspects of the
season, weather, month and time of their birth. Every drow born into respected society
is therefore imbued with a birth glyph which comprises of four symbols, one
from each of the sets. Each glyph has both a positive and negative meaning
which can be read as indicative to the true nature of the bearer. These glyphs
always run down the left arm of an individual and should not be confused with those
found elsewhere on the body. The same symbols also have different meanings when
placed on inanimate objects, clothing or buildings.
**************************************
Arty note:
These glyphs were
hand painted in Windsor and Newton water-mixable oils on 2.5x3.5in Bristol
Vellum art trading cards and highlighted using with silver/black fine-liners.
The variety of background colours is a representation of drow skin tones, the
glyphs themselves are always pale blue, with the exception of criminals whose
glyphs are forcibly branded red. All presented glyphs have been rendered in
their original pale blue state.
Completed glyphs and their
meanings can be found in the ‘drow birth glyphs’ tab above.
